USA and Canada
The USA is the College’s top collaborating country. More than 15,000 articles have been co-authored by Imperial and US-based authors over the last 10 years.
The College is home to more than 200 students from the USA and Canada. Many of these students opt to study on one of the College’s 1-year Master’s programmes. A substantial number of the College’s US students are in possession of a prestigious Fulbright or Marshall scholarship.
There are several long-standing exchange programmes between Imperial and universities in the USA, including the University of California, MIT, and Carnegie Mellon University.
The College also collaborates on a number of short-term summer programmes with strategic partners including MIT and the University of British Columbia (UBC). These allow undergraduates from both institutions to undertake a period of supervised research overseas at the partner institution. MIT and Imperial also collaborate on the Global Fellows Programme, a summer school for early-stage PhD students from both institutions.
Imperial academics from across all areas of the College are involved in world-leading research with institutions in the USA. Imperial’s Space and Atmospheric Physics Group led development of the magnetometer for the Cassini Mission (a NASA spacecraft mission in orbit around Saturn). The College is also collaborating with UCLA on JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer), a European Space Agency spacecraft mission due to be launched in 2020 to go to the Jupiter system.
The College signed an MoU with UBC in 2014 and collaboration is underway in the areas of Design Engineering and Sports Innovation Challenges. Imperial’s Sustainable Gas Institute and the University of Calgary are currently collaborating to advance work on the extraction of hydrocarbons.
