MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator)
What is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)?
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a self-reporting questionnaire designed to increase your understanding of yourself, your motivations, your natural strengths and your potential areas for growth. It will give you information on your preferred style of working and interacting with other people. The feedback will always be constructive because the indicator is looking at your preferences and therefore your likely strengths, as well as positive qualities of different personality styles. As such it can be a valuable tool in careers guidance and career development.
It is based on the psychology of Jung, and more than 60 years of research and development by Katharine Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs-Myers. Today it is the most widely used instrument for understanding normal personality differences. It is used in developing effective teams, improving communication and resolving conflict, as well as in many other situations.
The Careers Service at Imperial offers MBTI sessions centrally once a term. The interactive feedback session will help you to understand your personality type and its impact on your career choices.
The feedback session will look at your strengths and positive qualities as well as those of the other 15 different personality preferences (16 Types for the MBTI). This will help to improve your communication skills by giving you a greater understanding of yourself and others. A better understanding of how you differ from others may place you in a better position to choose your career path and identify what style of job-hunting and working environment suits you best. However, it cannot give you a list of jobs to choose.
