If you are starting at Imperial in the autumn term 2018, please note that you can access appointments and other services provided by the Careers Service from the first date of the autumn term, Monday 1 October 2018.

Careers Fair at Imperial

The Careers Service runs an extensive events programme throughout the academic year, with the majority of the events taking place in the autumn and spring terms - in line with graduate recruitment schedules. We are always adding new events, but for an overview of what we do, please see the list further down this page.

You can prepare for Careers Service events with our Quick Guide to Networking and our Networking handout [pdf], or by making an appointment to see one of our Careers Consultants; you should also make sure you know the best practice in graduate recruitment [word doc].

Seminars and workshops

Throughout the year we run regular sessions covering a variety of careers related topics. We’ve themed our sessions into four categories from fast-paced introductions (intensives) through to longer more practical sessions (labs). A description of each category is given below to help you navigate to what’s most appropriate for your particular needs.

 Career Intensives These presentations are fast-paced lasting approximately 30 minutes to provide starting points to help you understand the basics of the subject. Sessions cover topics such as CVs and Cover Letters.

 Career Essentials These seminars typically last 50 minutes and are designed to provide you with the core knowledge and an understanding of the subject matter. Sessions cover the range of application stages, networking and how to make career choices at various points of your degree.

Career Labs These workshops last approximately 90 minutes and are designed to be highly interactive. Throughout the session you will be expected to participate in various activities to help you understand and gain experience in the subject. Sessions cover the range of application stages, career decision making and transferable skills development including assertiveness and presentation skills.

Career Discovery These seminars provide a starting point to explore occupational areas and have a focus on how to secure and make the most of internships within the specific field. Our Placement & Internship Advisors will share their knowledge of the industry sectors and provide you with top tips about the relevant sector.

Employer led skills workshops

These sessions aim to develop your commercial awareness and business acumen, at the same time as developing your understanding of the skills typically sought by graduate employers, and preparing you for the recruitment process. Sessions often focus on areas such as presentations, teamwork and practical business simulations. Each session is two hours long and they are primarily targeted at penultimate and final year students.

We also run a week of employer led events in June, specifically for PhD students.

'Focus on...' sector weeks

Imperial studentsAre you looking for something a bit different? Are you interested in a career in the environment sector? How about working in the charity and not for profit sector? Or are you more interested in policy development or science communication?

We run a week-long programme for each of these sectors at different points during the year;

  • Focus on... Environment (Monday 29 October - Friday 2 November 2018)

A week of events helping you explore and learn more about careers in the environment sector. A series of talks from professionals will cover the career opportunities in the sector including environmental impact assessment, regulation, policy advising, conservation and waste management.

  • Focus on...SMEs & Enterprise - Santander Scheme Launch (Monday 19 November - Friday 23 November 2018)

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have a range of opportunities to rival the graduate recruitment schemes and other graduate roles offered by larger organisations. The SME and Enterprise Week 2018 will see a range of companies, such as start-ups, SMEs, and entrepreneurs discuss topics and deliver sessions to help you explore the opportunities available and to connect with diverse and interesting organisations. 

  • Focus on... Science Communication and Policy (Monday 21 January - Friday 25 2019)

This week will see a selection of events to get you started in a career in the science communication sector, and give you more information to help you decide if this sector is for you. There will be workshops on gaining an internship in this sector, talks from professionals and the chance to learn more. If this sounds like it’s for you - get involved!

  • Focus on...Charities & Not for Profit - Charity Insight Launch (Monday 28 January - Friday 1 February 2019)

There is a lot more to charities than volunteering and our Not for Profit and Charity Week 2018 will allow you to delve into this vast sector. The series of events will provide you with a chance to see what this highly rewarding industry has to offer and to learn about the range of opportunities available.

  • Focus on...Big Data & Analytics (Monday 11 - Friday 15 February 2019)

This week provides you with a number of opportunities to hear from and network with professionals who have built their career in the field of Data and Analytics across a wide range of industries. A series of company presentations, panel discussions and careers fair will give you insights into this sector.

Careers Café

Careers CafeCareers Cafés are informal, small group discussion sessions that take place in the Careers Service, covering a wide variety of topics - subjects in the past have included PhD into management consultancy/business etiquette/International Development careers.

Each Café is led by a member of the Careers Service who has an interest and some expertise in that area. Occasionally experts from within a sector will be invited to lead the Careers Café giving you the benefit of their experience. This is an excellent way to gain some insider tips about entry routes into your area of interest. The structure will vary from session to session, however, they are very much discussion-based and offer the opportunity for you to raise questions to the rest of the group, as well as to the facilitator.

Lunchtime careers talks

Lunchtime Careers TalkLunchtime Careers Talks take place every Tuesday and Thursday in the autumn and spring terms, and are 50 minute sessions on a variety of sectors and organisations, and provide a great opportunity for you to learn more about the huge diversity of occupations that may be open to you. Talks are given by organisations where Imperial graduates have gone on to, and sectors that are actively looking to recruit Imperial graduates .

Organisations participating in the past have included Airbus, Barclays, BP, Crowdcube, EY, Frontier, GSK, Salesforce, SEO London, Severn Trent and UBS.  Talks have included 'Ask an Expert in the Water Industry', 'Considering Teaching as a Next Step', and 'Science Careers Outside the Lab'.

Employer events

Careers Fairs

Careers Fairs provide you with the opportunity to meet recruiters and find out about the programmes on offer from different organisations. This will help you to make informed decisions and hopefully meet some useful contacts. You do not need to book for our Careers Fairs (note: booking is required for the Finance & Consulting Careers Fair), you just need to bring along a valid Imperial ID.

Please note that all our careers fairs are for current Imperial College students and recent alumni only.

‌‌‌The Careers Forums are an excellent opportunity to find out more about roles in a particular sector, and a chance to network with professionals in that industry. Each forum has six professionals from the given sector, providing an insight into their experiences in different areas of work through short presentations, followed by a Question and Answer session and networking.

A significant number of employers make presentations on and off campus during the autumn term. Employers use presentations to inform you about their businesses and the range of opportunities available. Presentations provide a useful insight into the type of people and culture of an organisation and offer the chance to network with recent recruits and discuss their experiences.

Mock Interviews with employers

During the academic cycle, some recruiters will arrange a series of mock interview sessions. These offer you the chance to practice your interview technique with a trained interviewer in the sector you are looking to enter.
