Why recruit an apprentice?
An apprenticeship is an opportunity to grow your own talent pipeline by employing staff who develop their skills on-the-job whilst following an approved learning programme.
The Apprenticeship Levy
In April 2017 the government enforced an Apprenticeship Levy on employers with a pay bill of over £3 million per annum, charging at a rate of 0.5% of the employer’s pay bill.
The Levy can be used to pay for an apprentice’s training, and their end-point-assessment, but we are not entitled to use the Levy to pay the apprentice’s salary. This means that we can use the training funds available to not only recruit new staff, but also to retrain or upskill existing staff. This might be worth thinking about when considering funding professional qualifications for current staff.
