About the Department

Imperial's Department of Mathematics is one of the strongest and most active in the UK.

Mathematics is the engine of science and engineering. It is the set of ideas, insights and techniques that enable us to understand, analyse and solve problems. It also has an elegance and beauty that fascinates and inspires those who understand it.

We offer a range of mathematics degrees that will develop both your knowledge and your creativity, built around our research expertise in four core areas:

  • Pure Mathematics
  • Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics
  • Mathematical Finance
  • Statistics

The high quality of the staff in the Department of Mathematics is demonstrated by the number of prizes won by our academic staff and the calibre of our graduates.

We are home to several Fellows of the Royal Society and international prize winners, many of whom are active in teaching and project support, which is strongly influenced by their research expertise.

A member of our Pure Mathematics section, Professor Sir Simon Donaldson, was knighted in 2012 for services to mathematics, having also previously won the prestigious Fields Medal and the Shaw Prize for Mathematics.

We hold open days several times a year where you can hear talks about the courses and other activities of the Department and the College. Current students lead tours of facilities including our Mathematics Learning Centre for independent and group study. You will also have many opportunities to find out more about us and ask questions.

Choosing a course

There are 11 streams of study available in Mathematics, and four joint mathematics and computing courses. Our BSc and MSci Mathematics degrees are the broadest, giving you the greatest level of flexibility in your choice of optional modules. The MSci in Mathematics allows you to continue your studies to Master's level in the final year. In addition, there are opportunities to pursue teacher training or a Year in Europe.

All students follow nearly the same programme for the first two years, gaining a great breadth of understanding in pure, applied and statistical mathematics. In the third and fourth years, students are allowed to choose options from a large variety of modules, allowing them to specialise under a specific degree coding.

Due to the structure of the programme, it is possible to transfer between the different degree codings once at College, subject to the relevant approval. Additional entry requirements may also apply, such as proficiency in a relevant modern language for study abroad. Thus students should only apply to one degree course within the Department; there is no advantage in applying to more than one.
