A diverse technical workforce
Our highly skilled technicians play a vital role in delivering the College's world-class research and teaching activities. We employ over 780 technicians, who manufacture all manner of bespoke equipment and parts for use in experiments. This can include casings for spacecraft destined for far-flung regions of the solar system; rigs to test how prosthetic limbs respond to forces; precision micrometre parts for laser experiments; and even outreach exhibits that tour science festivals and events around the country.
In May 2017, Imperial became one of the over 35 universities and research institutions from across the UK to have backed the pledge to support their technicians by becoming a founder signatory of the Technician Commitment.
'I am proud that Imperial is a founder signatory to the Technician Commitment. Imperial’s technical staff play an essential role in our community across both teaching and research, and their loyalty and commitment to the College is greatly valued. This important initiative will help the College grow our existing provision to look at what more we can do to support our technicians and help them develop their careers.'
